menjalankan kerja-kerja menenun.
Mereka mengambil masa selama 44
hari untuk menyiapkan keseluruhan tenunan.
Sebanyak lapan intin (gelung) benang
digunakan: dua intin benang
loseng manakala enam intin benang
digunakan pada pakan.
Tenunan pua ini dihasilkan dengan menggunakan teknik
tenun ikat yang melibatkan proses menegi
(proses menyediakan benang pakan), mengarap
dan mengikat (proses sebelum
mewarna benang) . Warna asli dari
tumbuh-tumbuhan digunakan dalam proses mewarna benang.
Gabungan motif haiwan, alam semula jadi seperti pucuk
paku dan trabai membentuk satu kombinasi motif yang indah dan berseni,
menghiasi kain pua terpanjang yang menjadi kebanggaan kaum etnik Iban, Sarawak.
The pua is a
warp ikat textile made by the Iban of
Sarawak. At 405 inches long and 14 inches wide, this particular pua is the longest made in Malaysia. It
took 44 days for weavers from the Belong Training Center in Sarawak to make
this pua in 1994.
Six apprentice weavers were involved in this project -
three concentrated on setting up the warp threads (the mengirit process), while the other three took turns weaving it. A
total of eight intin or hanks of
thread were needed, two for the warp and six for the weft.
Traditional tie-dye techniques were used in the making
of this unusually long piece. First, the warp (longitudinal threads) had to be
prepared using the following process: mengarap
(setting up the warp), menegi (preparing
the warping frame), and mengikat
(tying the resist). The prepared warp was then dyed using natural dyes of plant
origin.
The combination of motifs decorating this pua include those derived from the natural world such as fern
shoots, and stylised objects such as the trabai
shield motif.
