Pua is a form of woven textile art practiced by the Iban for generations, an art form which portrays their identityand the strong inluence of customs and tradision on their way of life. In the past, it was believed that the design of the pua cloth created using the 'wrap-ikat' technique, was inspired by dreams and indirectly portrayed distinctive aesthetic and mystical elements. Amongst the motifs often used include plants, animal such as the chameleon (engkarung) the crocodile and humans (engkramba).
Cotton thread used in pua weaving is dyed using natural dye stuffs such as mengkudu root, tarum leaves, turmeric and engkerabai leaves. Today, the physical appearance of the pua cloth has incorporated a number of variations, be it from the perspective of patterns, colours, material and use.
