This is an indigenous form of weaving originating from Sabah, also known as tubau cloth. The skill of weaving this textile form was believed to have been introduced form was believed to have been introduced from the Philippines and was pioneered by the Irranun tribe who resided around the village of Merabau, in the district of Kota Belud, Sabah. The weaving of dastar cloth requires creativity and the undivided attention of the weaver, especially during the motif embroidering process. Multi-coloured threads are used to create motifs originating from plants, animals (horses) as well as geometric patterns. The traditional colours of the Bajau ethnic group such as black, white, yellow and green have become part of the dastar weaving identity since time immemorial. The dastar cloth is used by Bajau males as a form of headgear (pudong), worn during ceremonies, celebrations or weddings.
