Decorative textile embroidery utilities colorful threads, which are sometimes, combined with beads and sequins. Such embroidery usually adorns clothing (shirts, trousers, shawls and sashes) as well as furnishings and decorative articles at home (curtains, ceiling ornaments, pillow covers, dish covers and other items). The motif designs and the variety of ornamental embroidery forms are inspired by nature, being mostly based on flora, fauna and awan larat (trailing clouds) patterns.
Amongst the embroidery art forms still in existence today include Baba-Nyonya embroidery, sulaman pis (embroidery from Sabah ethnic communities), kelingkam or keringkam, and tulang belut. On the other hand telepuk (gilded) is an ancient decorative art of embellishing the appearence of a piece of batik or woven textile using gold leafs applied on stamed design on the surface o the cloth.
