The usage of ceramics as daily utensils began since the Neolithic or New Stone Age. Clay was kneaded and moulded into various forms as desired or needed. The accumulated skills of the local ceramic makers gave birth to several forms of ceramics including styles of vases such as the Sayong, Mambong, Terenang, Iban, Kuron and many other vase types. To add value to such ceramic products, the surfaces of the ceramic items were decorated with organic and geometric motifs. Local flowers such as the bunga tanjung, bunga padi, bunga kedudut, bunga cengkih and siku keluang are among the popular motifs that frequently decorate traditional ceramic containers.
The creativity of the designers
in pioneering new dimensions in ceramic crafts has brought a new era in the
production of local ceramic products. This change became more and more
pronounced as modern techniques slowly replaced the traditional way of
producing ceramics. The use of modern technology has little by little changed
the way ceramics were locally made. The
introduction of modern techniques such as the potter’s wheel machine and the
electrical clay oven or kiln has helped domestic ceramic producers to raise
their production.
A unique mix of colours and both
traditional as well as contemporary designs are evident in the ceramic products
inspired by the creativity of local ceramic artists. The ceramic craftsmen’s
innovativeness and sensitivity to users’ tastes have produced a large variety
of new products such as creative flower vases, lamp stands and containers for
egg gifts, sweets and deserts that reflect a local Malaysian identity. The
diversity of roles and uses of these ceramics ensure that the products are ever
popular among all levels of society. Ceramic products are not just useful for
the kitchen and such household use, but are also suitable for all kinds of
decorative uses and as souvenirs for everyone.
