Songket weaving represents the pinnacle of refinement in the Malay textile arts, handed down through the centuries. The skill and creativity of the weaver is revealed through the interplay of motifs, resulting in beautiful and at the same time attractive textile pieces. It was believed that the art of weaving developed in this country as early as the 17th century.
In the past, the refinement and beauty of the songket made it an exclusive fabric., subject to special customary limitations. Songket wearing was limited to members of the aristocracy, palace officials or individuals who were awarded honors by the Sultan. Today, songket garments are worn by people from all walks of society, and is especially suitable for official functions, dinners and wedding ceremonies.
The elegence of the songket fabric continues to fascinate us as an expression of the nation’s artistic and cultural impetus. Efforts are being made to ensure that the weaving tradition is alive and well. The tradisional loom or kek, the motifs and the decoratives style of the songket, as well as the weaving technique continues to reveal an inner beauty and perfection, conceived in the distant past and yet still vibrant to this very day.
